Labour’s history of innovation in government includes pioneering a major transformation from a monocrop sugar-based economy to the diversified economic environment that our country enjoys today. We have always actively supported and facilitated food production efforts in the farming and fishing sectors and NextGen SKN will facilitate the increased local food production within the federation. Our public market in Basseterre is the major hub for many of our farmers and fishermen and we will redesign it in a manner that will be more attractive to the consumer. It will become part of a local network of commercialized Farmer’s Markets to be conveniently located throughout the Federation. We will link farmers to government institutions and aggressively pursue new production and sales opportunities, including export where possible.
NextGen SKN’s vision for the federation includes greener buildings, cleaner vehicles, the increased utilization of solar and the exploration and use of geothermal, wind and biomass resources. We intend to introduce incentives to encourage the purchase of energy efficient products. We will facilitate and install solar panels on all affordable homes constructed by the National Housing Corporation. This is not only a benefit to the environment but will provide great financial relief to our low-income homeowners. Labour cares about our environment and that is why we intend to create an Environmental Monitoring Unit to increase the control of pollution within our Federation. Legislation will be introduced to ban the import of single use plastics and Styrofoam. We must exert effort to secure a healthier environment for future generations.
Over the last three decades up to 2015, St. Kitts & Nevis experienced dramatic improvement to its socioeconomic development. NextGen SK will continue our efforts to implement measures to increase productivity within the economy. We will focus on wealth creation initiatives that would put capital in the hands of ordinary citizens. When our people have more money to save, invest and grow the economy, we all benefit. The St. Kitts & Nevis Labour Party understands that a strong and sustainable economy provides wealth creation and business start-up opportunities for service providers of all sizes and creates and secures good jobs in both the public and private sectors. We will partner with commercial banks to provide easier access for new and small enterprises seeking funding and remove the barriers to local entrepreneurial ownership. We intend to develop more opportunities to showcase our rich heritage and history and attract at least two world class resorts during our next term in office.
The safety and security of our citizens is of paramount importance to us; it is one of our most pressing concerns. Labour understands that high level crime and violence are threat to health and development. We believe that crime fighting demands the involvement of all stakeholders across the federation to effectively combat criminal activities in our country. NextGen SKN will restructure the police force and incentivize our police officers. We will employ more focused deterrence policing which will target specific issues affecting the community. This strategy would require strong community and law enforcement comradery. The idea is to rebuild the community’s trust in our police officers. We will also ensure that the crime statistics are published quarterly for public scrutiny and ensure the use of drones is properly regulated to safeguard and enhance security of residents.
