In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, where thousands of young people are jobless and cannot take care of their families, Timothy Harris, Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis is engaging in a frivolous legal exercise. The regime claims that “Cabinet determined that it will be seeking legal advice to determine whether Dr. Denzil Douglas should reimburse monies paid to him while he sat in Parliament …”
This is political buffoonery of the highest order and a total waste of state resources, especially at a time when the economy of our country is falling apart and the government has no workable solution to get it back on track. This course of action that Harris has undertaken is especially worrisome when children are going to bed hungry, hotel workers cannot make ends meet and businesses are going under.
“I’ve served as the Leader of the Opposition and the duly-elected member of Constituency Number Six (6|). I have diligently and vigorously represented the interest of my constituents, citizens and residents and Party over the last five years. Harris and the Attorney-General brought a case against me that I won in the first instance and lost on Appeal. However, up to the point leading to the Court ruling in February 2020, all monies paid to me were lawful based on the services rendered. This is why it is beyond my comprehension and puzzling to right-thinking citizens that Harris would want to vengefully give retroactive application to the Court ruling by paying back monies that I have earned in execution of my Office. This is a clear attempt to poison the political culture of our country and to harass and attack me,” said the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas, political leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party.
“His quest for legal advice will amount to nothing, and Harris knows this. His ranting and raving, packaged as official statements, are intended to mislead, deceive and create confusion in the minds of the people. This is nothing but political distraction from Harris’ inability to stimulate the economy, put our young people back to work and put food in the mouths of children and elderly pensioners. It is also an act of political fury, by Harris and other members of the regime, against being forced by the SKNLP to face up to the Election Petitions we have filed with the Court. These petitions have exposed the scandalous and shocking electoral fraud and land-for-vote corruption that polluted the last General Election. This kind of propaganda is fake and vicious news at its best, and our people know it. Using the same logic, Harris should vacate the Office of the Prime Minister and refuse his salary until the Court rules on the six Election Petitions that were filed against his illegitimate regime,” Dr. Douglas concluded.
